The New Yorker Hotel: Darcie ,Summers here can deeprss anyone ,and this August was temp wise the worst in my over 30 years of living here ,with over 30 days of 110f heat and it is an all time record for this area . It is like the reverse of your Nebraska winters . Shadow is out of the Evolution line of Pointers ,and when a dog bred to work cannot ,because of the extreme temps they get cabin fever ,just like us humans do in those conditions ,and with morning temps of 90f you just have to watch what you do or you and your dog will get heat stroke . This week we had 2 guys in from Chicago try to go hiking in our South Mountain Park at 9am with the temps in the high 90;s . They got lost ,dehidrated from not bringing enough water and one of them died from it . I start my Pardra Park roading at 5.30 am in the dark so all 3 of my dogs can run at 75f and I carry enough water to keep them hydrated dring the 15/2o minutes it takes to do the 1 mile lap on the trike ,so by the time I do all 3 it is about almost 7am and it is about 85 f by that time . Getting back to the food ,I tried the IAM's weight loss on Shadow ,and all I got for my efforts was her deficating in copious wet amounts on my bedroom rug ,and me having to shampoo it multiple times . It just seems as she has gotten older {10yrs} she just gets lazy in the afternoons when it is hot ,but at night at 3am she will paw me ,to let her out the kitchen door ,so go figure! ,so now with it being in the 90s I just put her outside with the younger dogs to save me the clean up . Iam just going to cut out allmost all of the treats ,hand feeding that has made her fat ,and me also and up the miles as it gets cooler ,as it is simply burn more than you intake and that equals weight loss for her and stronger legs for me as I take my laps every other day ,with all of my 3 dogs , The Purina Pro is 28% protien and that is what we will stay on it all there is very little fat content in it and most dogs it makes them look almost too skinny ,but now Shadow is begining to get a set of sholders and hocks that are solid muscle that had been lost on her from being sedentary while I recovered from my bike crash in 2009 . Next weekend Jessie gets snake broke ,so we will be ready for Quail season in Oct . When I got her she was 6 mo old and 32 lbs ,now at 11 months she has got to be 40+ lbs of slim solid muscle that can run like the wind and now pulls me around the park on the flats like it is nothing ! You are very proud of the progress Kate is making ,and I am too for Jessie ,because she is a gift from God to help me ,just as was my Jasmine 16yrs RIP Now lets us both have some FUN ! with our puppys !John K.Legacy Kennels
